What are quick loans?

“Quick loan” is not a legal product type. It describes loans — usually short-term loans of up to R8,000, sometimes smaller personal loans — where the whole process runs online and the money is paid out within minutes or hours of approval. The same interest and fee caps apply as for any other registered loan.

How quick is quick?

The time from application to money in your account depends on each step. These are the timings lenders on Finmart publish:

StepTypical time
Online application3 – 10 minutes
Credit and affordability checkMinutes to 2 hours during business hours
Signing and DebiCheck approvalA few minutes in your banking app
Payout after approvalFrom seconds (instant payments) to the next business day

Wonga, for example, pays in as little as 15 minutes if you apply and approve the DebiCheck mandate between 8 am and 5 pm. Lime24 pays loans approved before 2 pm in the same afternoon’s payout cycle.

What speeds up or slows down your application

Speeds it upSlows it down
Verifying income through online bankingBlurry, incomplete or password-protected bank statements
Applying on a weekday during business hoursApplying late at night, on weekends or public holidays
Salary paid into the account you apply withIncome spread over several accounts
Details that match your ID and bank records exactlyTyping errors in your ID number or bank details
A bank that supports instant paymentsInter-bank transfers that clear the next day

Types of quick loans

  • Payday loans — small amounts, repaid on your next payday, usually the fastest to approve.
  • Short-term instalment loans — up to R8,000 over a few months, with similar speed.
  • Quick personal loans — larger amounts from online lenders and banks that decide the same day for existing clients.
  • Loans through matching services — one application sent to several registered lenders, so you receive offers within minutes.

Does applying for a quick loan affect your credit score?

Comparing offers does not. When a lender processes your application, it requests your credit report and the enquiry is recorded. One or two enquiries have little effect, but many applications in a short time can make lenders more cautious. Being declined is not itself recorded as a negative listing, but the enquiry remains.

Repaying a loan on time adds positive payment history, which can make future credit cheaper.

Things to check before you accept a fast offer

  • The lender’s NCR registration number
  • The total amount repayable in the quote, not only the instalment
  • The repayment date and whether it matches your payday
  • Whether insurance is added and whether you may use your own policy
  • What happens if a debit order fails

Scammers rely on urgency. See the warning signs on our loans overview.

How to apply for a quick loan step by step

  1. Prepare your ID number, cell phone, bank details and 3 months of bank statements.
  2. Compare registered lenders and note their payout times.
  3. Apply on a weekday morning to catch the same-day payout cycle.
  4. Choose online bank verification if the lender offers it — it is faster than uploading documents.
  5. Check the quote carefully: amount, repayment date, fees and total repayable.
  6. Sign, approve the DebiCheck mandate in your banking app and watch for the payout confirmation.

Requirements for a quick loan

  • Be 18 or older (a few lenders set the minimum at 21)
  • Have a valid South African ID; some lenders also accept permanent residents
  • Earn a regular income that is paid into your own bank account
  • Have a South African bank account and a cell phone number
  • Pass the lender’s credit check and affordability assessment

First-time applicants are usually offered smaller amounts. After one or two loans repaid on time, many lenders approve repeat customers faster and for higher limits.

Frequently asked questions about quick loans

How long does approval take?

Online lenders often decide within minutes. The final approval follows once your income has been verified, which can take up to 2 hours during business hours.

Are quick loans more expensive?

Not because of the speed. The cost depends on the amount, the term and the fees, all capped by the National Credit Act. Short-term lenders usually charge close to the caps, so compare the total amount repayable.

Can I get a quick loan on a weekend?

You can apply at any time. Some lenders pay out 24/7 through instant payments, others process weekend approvals on the next business day.

Can I get a quick loan without documents?

Several lenders let you verify your income through your online banking instead of uploading documents. You still need a valid South African ID and a bank account in your name.

Is a loan with no credit check faster?

Registered lenders must check your credit record and affordability. A lender that promises no check at all is either not registered or not lending responsibly — avoid it.
