Your guide to loans and consumer credit in South Africa

Education
Our team brings together people with backgrounds in finance, economics and journalism. We work with writers trained in financial analysis and market research, and with editors who check every figure against a published source before it goes on the site.
Specialties
We cover consumer credit for the South African market: personal loans, short-term and payday loans, quick and cash loans, online lending and consolidation loans. For every offer we look past the advertised interest rate at the total amount repayable — the initiation fee, the monthly service fee, credit life insurance and the term all change what you actually pay. We also explain the caps the National Credit Act sets: 5% a month on a first short-term loan of up to R8,000 repaid within six months, an initiation fee of R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1,000, a service fee of up to R60 plus VAT a month, and a ceiling of the repo rate plus 21 percentage points a year on unsecured credit.
Work experience
The Finmart editorial team is part of the Finmatcher platform, which has been producing financial content for European and emerging markets since 2021. We have covered South Africa since 2026. We re-check lender terms, registration status and fees as the market moves and update our pages when the figures change.

Biography

We research how credit actually works in South Africa: which lenders hold a valid NCR registration, what a pre-agreement quote has to show you, how affordability assessments and credit bureau records affect an application, and how much a loan costs once every fee is added. We answer those questions with figures and named sources rather than with marketing claims. Our focus is financial literacy. We judge every offer against the same criteria, set out the drawbacks alongside the benefits, and publish tools such as the loan calculator so you can check the numbers yourself. How our rankings are put together and how we are paid are set out in full on our evaluation methodology and “How we make money” pages. Finmart is a comparison platform. We are not a credit provider, and our content is general guidance rather than personalised financial or legal advice — only the pre-agreement quote and agreement from the lender itself are binding.
